Curfew has been clamped on six Punjab towns and shoot-at-sight orders issued as widespread violence and police firings took a toll of 13 persons, including two police constables, during the one-day bandh sponsored by the Hindu Suraksha Samiti. Over 200 persons were injured in the violence. The violent incidents came as the tripartite talks to solve the vexed Punjab problem resumed in Delhi.

The new Soviet leader Konstantin Chernenko called for “honest negotiations between equals which respect the security of each side” to settle international problems. Chernenko declared: “We will not be scared by threats. Our defences are strong and we will be able to protect everything accomplished by all Soviet people.”

A mystery disease which has killed two children and hospitalised two others has created panic about an epidemic outbreak in Chittaranjan Park in South Delhi. The disease, which begins with low fever leading to haemorrhage under the skin, resulting in a comatose condition within 24 hours of falling ill, has struck a jhuggi colony of fish sellers.

The controversial takeover bid of Escorts by Swraj Paul has taken a new turn with the government directing the Life Insurance Corporation of India and other financial institutions holding shares in the company to assert their full rights. From all indications, the government appears to be bent on assuming a major say in the management of the company. The notice served on Escorts by the LIC calling for a general body meeting to replace nine part-time directors has shocked industrial circles.
