A constable of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) was killed and a naik injured in an ambush by five extremists in Gurdaspur district as authorities decided to extend the curfew in six towns to check the recurrence of violent incidents witnessed during the Punjab bandh on February 14. Constable Ranjit Singh was killed on the spot and naik Mangal Singh was seriously injured in the grenade attack.

A R Antulay’s Case

The Supreme Court overruled the judgment of R B Sule, Bombay special judge, that said that sanction to prosecute A R Antulay was necessary as he was a public servant in his capacity as a member of the legislative assembly. The Court felt that an early trial was in the interest of Antulay, former Maharashtra chief minister, and, therefore, ordered the cases to be withdrawn from Sule’s court and sent to the Bombay High Court.

Budget Session

The revised programme of the forthcoming budget session of Parliament puts an end to the speculation that the government might be planning to have only a vote on account, cutting the session short. The session begins on February 23 with the President’s address to the joint sitting of both Houses. The motion of thanks on the President’s address will be discussed till March 1 .
