Last week, I wrote about the disastrous North American opening weekend for The Marvels and what it revealed about troubles for the Marvel Studios movie brand. Its $46 million debut was the worst in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) thus far, dating all the way back to 2008’s Iron Man, and including such long-forgotten entries as The Incredible Hulk starring Edward Norton (who was recast).

Things aren’t getting any better for The Marvels. This past weekend, it made about $10 million. That’s a decline of 77 percent from its opening weekend, the worst drop in the MCU thus far. It’s not unusual for comic-book movies to be frontloaded. But even megahits like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, which made $257 million and $357 million, respectively, in their openings, declined less sharply than that in their second weekends. At this rate, The Marvels won’t just fail to make what these movies made in their opening weekends; it will fail to reach the $153 million Captain Marvel made in its 2019 opening weekend.

A result this bad should inspire some serious introspection.
