In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle told Oprah that someone in the royal family had expressed “concerns” about the possible “skin color” of their son, Archie, before he was born. Prince Harry said he would never name names. But Piers Morgan, the British TV host, made no such promise.

Somehow the Dutch translation of Omid Scobie’s new book Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival — which is reportedly a hatchet job on all the royals except Meghan and Harry — slipped in that the two culprits in the alleged instance of “unconscious bias” were none other than King Charles and Kate Middleton. Scobie’s book was recalled in the Netherlands on the day of publication after early reviewers noticed the bombshell.

The reason Scobie can’t simply come out with the allegation is because of Britain’s strict libel laws. Besides, to defend oneself against a defamation action, the defamatory statement in this case would need to be true.

Scobie claims he had nothing to do with the Dutch “error.” But the name-and-shame looks less like an error and more like an additional detail. One that, most likely, was in the original manuscript before being removed at the advice of the publisher’s lawyers.

Piers Morgan, a defender of the royal family and a critic of Harry and Meghan, refuses to tolerate such nonsense. He said the British people “who actually pay for the British royal family” were entitled to know. Risking legal pushback, he told his audience the names.

“I don’t believe any racist comments were ever made by any of the royal family, and until there is actual evidence of those comments being made, I will never believe it,” Morgan said.
