I had a great conversation on Thursday with Mark Zandi and his cohosts on their excellent podcast, Inside Economics. Dr. Zandi is chief economist of Moody’s Analytics, where he directs economic research. Mark is one of the top business economists in the world.
We talked about the Fed’s interest rate decision last week, the (in my view) counterproductive overemphasis the Fed places on transparency, the market reaction to the Fed’s decision, the way the 2024 presidential election might interact with the path of monetary policy in 2024, why consumer sentiment is so low given the strength of the economy, why inflation makes me feel like I’m being punched in the face, whether businesses and investors should factor basic social stability into their 2024 and 2025 planning, the fate of the expiring provisions of the Trump tax cuts, bond vigilantes, fiscal policy, the bipartisan consensus not to address the national debt, and whether the U.S. will have a recession in 2024.
