New Delhi: Apple has concluded it’s “let loose” event, and the rumours were right. We have OLED iPads, powered by M4 chips. There is nothing like fresh silicon, especially ‘Apple Silicon’ to rejuvenate a stagnating segment. The M4 chip is all about efficiency, and is fabricated using second generation three nanometer tech.

Both the CPU and GPU have ten cores. On the CPU, four cores are for performance, and six cores are for efficiency, making it about 50 per cent more powerful than the M2 chips found on the previous iPad Pro iteration. The performance cores have improved branch prediction, and wider decode and execution engines. There is a deeper execution engine for the efficiency cores, that will now do a better job at prioritising tasks.

The 10 core GPU builds on the GPU architecture introduced in the M3. This is the chip that brings a whole bunch of new capabilities to iPads, including dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and hardware-accelerated mesh shading.

Of course the M4 chip boasts Apple’s fasted neural engine, capable of 38 trillion operations per second. This provides the on-device AI capabilities to scrub objects from videos. The speed surpasses the neural processing units in any AI PCs available in the market today.

There is also faster memory bandwidth, and next-gen machine learning accelerators in the CPU. Apple is positioning the iPad Pro with the M4 as an outrageously overpowered device, at least when it comes to artificial intelligence capabilities. We would like to see what Apps come out to exploit these capabilities.

The M4 chip features an entirely new display engine that has been developed using pioneering technologies. The display engine allows for stunning representation, precision, colour accuracy, brightness and uniformity in the Ultra Retina XDR display on the iPad Pro. We just wish Apple had come up with an easier name, or just updated what the Retina display means.

The Ultra Retina XDR display combines the light from two OLED panels. This is how they can be so bright.

The Apple M4 chip represents a significant leap in performance, power efficiency and AI capabilities. The iPad Pro is among the most powerful computing devices around, and is so thin that it reminds us of bendgate.
