New Delhi: Mumbai Indians (MI) made their claim stronger for the final as they struck early into the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 eliminator match against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), being played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana decided to bat first but failed to deliver a good start to her side with fellow opener Sophie Devine also sent back cheaply.

Mumbai Indians made a triple strike in the first powerplay itself with Hayley Matthews entering the wicket-taking tally first. She picked Devine (10 off 7) off the final delivery off the second over, which was a flighted one and Devine played down the wrong line coming ahead to block. She was beaten on the outside edge and the ball hit the off-stump. It was indeed a lovely delivery which left Devine in disbelief.

It was the turn of Mandhana (10 off 7) next as Harmanpreet Kaur called Nat Sciver-Brunt into the attack and she struck off the second delivery of the third over. It was a fuller delivery outside off and Mandhana tried to go over extra cover but it resulted in a miscue. The ball was up in the air and Shabnim Ismail took a calm catch, as both openers departed in quick succession.

Saika Ishaque joined the wicket-taking party in the fourth over sending back Disha Kasat for a duck. She played out three dots and went for a risky stroke off the fourth one, miscuing it by getting it on the lower part of the bat and not getting the necessary elevation. The ball went straight to Pooja Vastrakar at cover point, increasing troubles for RCB.
