New Delhi: Arvind Kejriwal’s wife Sunita Kejriwal has been appointed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to lead its campaign for the Lok Sabha elections in the national capital and other states while the Delhi chief minister remains imprisoned. Her first-ever roadshow will be held in Kalyanpuri today evening in support of the party’s East Delhi seat candidate Kuldeep Kumar.

Announcing the decision, Delhi minister Atishi addressed a press conference on Friday and stated that she will seek votes for the party in the absence of her husband and AAP chief who is in judicial custody in connection with the excise policy case.

“In protest against the arrest of Arvind Kejriwal, his wife Sunita Kejriwal will campaign to seek blessings for him and to seek votes for AAP candidates. She will seek blessings for him from the people of Delhi, Punjab, Gujarat and Haryana,” Atishi had said.

“She will hold a roadshow in East Delhi tomorrow and will seek blessings from the people of East Delhi for Arvind Kejriwal. On April 28, she will hold a roadshow in the West Delhi Lok Sabha constituency,” Atishi added.

Sunita, a former IRS officer, is gradually stepping into the limelight to take on a more prominent role within the party, aiming to boost the AAP’s election campaign, which took a hit following Kejriwal’s arrest in March on charges of money laundering. Kejriwal is expected to remain in judicial custody until May 7 following a court order.

AAP Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said Mrs Kejriwal is the most suitable person to unify the party amidst the current circumstances, asserting that her presence has had a positive impact on party members.

In Laxmi Nagar, the party took out a protest against the alleged conspiracy to keep the Delhi chief minister in jail and appealed to people to reply to the jailing with votes.

#जेल_का_जवाब_वोट_से pic.twitter.com/zG75PBPE5Y

In March, Sunita shared the stage with Congress stalwarts Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge while addressing mega rallies of the opposition’s INDIA bloc in Delhi and Ranchi, where the leaders hit out at the BJP for allegedly misusing central agencies to target opposition-governed states.

Till now, she has conducted three digital media briefings, primarily focused on conveying Arvind Kejriwal’s messages from jail to the public.

Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case related to the Delhi liquor policy case. Despite his arrest, he continues to hold the position of the Delhi chief minister with the AAP claiming there is no law stopping him from running his office from jail.
