New Delhi: With the deadline of May 1 for the squad announcement of the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, there has been lots of talk about which player will make it to India’s 15-member squad. India’s opening batter Shubman Gill has backed himself for the selection in the team. Shubman is currently leading Gujarat Titans (GT) and has been in great form in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2024). He has scored 304 runs at an average of 38 in 9 IPL matches.

Speaking to PTI Gill said Playing for the country is the biggest thing but he will do injustice to his IPL franchise if he starts thinking about the World Cup. “Playing for India is the biggest thing. But if I start thinking about the World Cup, then I will be doing injustice to my current team (GT) and myself”.

He also said that his focus is on IPL “If I have to be picked for the T20 World Cup, I will be picked. But right now, my focus is on IPL and how to get the best out of my team and perform the best for my team which also helps my players”.

Gill also said that it would be great for him to represent India in the upcoming World Cup but he is not focusing that ahead “Obviously as a player, I want to be there and play the World Cup and get that opportunity to represent my country at the highest level – the biggest stage of T20 cricket. Having played in a World Cup last year, I have had my share of experiences, and it would be great to be able to play another World Cup. But I am not thinking that far ahead”.
“I have scored almost 900 runs last season and if I had to be picked, I will be picked if not (then) best of luck to those who are picked”. He added.

Gujarat Titans (GT) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the 45th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, April 28. GT lost their last match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 3 wickets and is currently placed at the seventh spot and RCB won their last match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 35 runs and is currently placed at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table.
