Surat: The Congress on Friday suspended its Lok Sabha candidate from Surat, Nilesh Kumbhani, for six years, days after his rival and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Mukesh Dalal was elected unopposed from the constituency.

Issuing a statement, the Congress said, “The rejection of your nomination form makes it evident that you were either extremely negligent or had affiliations with the BJP. However, in accordance with the principles of natural justice, the disciplinary committee provided you with sufficient time to present your case before it.”

The suspension order signed by Balubhai Patel, a member of the disciplinary committee further said, “Your sudden disappearance without providing any explanation to the party has led to the decision to suspend you for six years.”

The Congress further said that Kumbhani was given the ticket to contest the polls with the hope that he would represent the large population of the Patidar community who had relocated to Surat from Saurashtra.

In its letter, the party further said, “People of Surat and party workers have become very angry due to your action and are expressing their anger in different ways. The Congress party has decided to suspend you for six years from the party.”

The returning officer had rejected his nomination form on April 21, and his three proposers submitted affidavits, claiming the signatures shown on the document were not theirs. After his candidature was rejected eight other candidates also left the fray, making Dalal a winner from the constituency unopposed.

However, releasing a video message, Kumbhani said that he did not disappear and said that he was in touch with several senior Congress leaders. In his video message, Kumbhani also alleged that Congress leaders did not help him in his campaign. He also accused some Congress leaders of aligning with the BJP.
