Charlotte Salomon will contest the seat after being selected following a process which started in November, when previous hopeful Nick Rose resigned.

She was reportedly the deputy chairman of the Saffron Walden Conservatives between 2018 and 2022, and stood for the Broad Oak and the Hallingburys Ward at Uttlesford District Council in the 2023 local elections.

According to her bio on X, formerly Twitter, she is currently a law student.

Mr Rose stepped down as a candidate after drawing criticism for his comments on climate change, transgender issues and immigration.

This newspaper revealed in November he was forced to delete a social media post in which he labelled people "idle benefit scroungers".

Mr Rose later apologised for the remarks.

Current MP Chloe Smith will not be standing at the election.
