Alfie Hammett, 19, and Joshua Howell, 18, have both been charged with the murder of Raymond James Quigley, from Wymondham, in January last year in the centre of Ipswich, as well as possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

Hammett, of Rushmere St Andrew, in Suffolk, and Howell, from Ipswich, both deny the charges.

The prosecution’s case is that Howell prevented Quigley’s friends from intervening by drawing a machete at the scene and providing an intimidating presence and it is argued this makes him guilty of Quigley’s murder too.

Howell has previously told the court that he met with Male 1, the suspect who the prosecution says stabbed Quigley and is Alfie Hammett, to sell him cannabis - not to pair up and later ambush Quigley.

He had taken a machete with him for protection as he had done routinely for drug deals, the court heard.

The pair met at Suffolk New College, in Ipswich, but Howell says the deal took place in an alleyway in the town.

During prosecutor Andrew Jackson’s cross examination of Howell, CCTV footage of the alleyway was analysed extensively to see if any drug deal was actually recorded.

Howell had previously told the jury that the film showed him taking his hand out of his pocket to make the deal.

But after the thoroughfare was viewed from different angles Howell said the deal took place at a point in the alley out of shot of any CCTV.

He said he and Male 1 had stopped in the alley at a point where there was no CCTV and waited for a family behind them to go past and then done the deal.

Mr Jackson put it to Howell that he had shifted his position because he realised the footage did not show the transaction. But Howell denied this.

“You’re trying to pull the wool over the jury’s eye aren’t you?” Jackson said. But Howell replied: “No sir.”

“You're changing your account and your lies are unravelling aren’t they?” Jackson persisted.

“No sir,” said Howell.

The trial continues.
