LAHORE – Blanketed by fog, Lahore and the plains of Pakistan remained in the grip of a cold wave on Wednesday with experts predicting the prevailing harsh weather conditions to persist during the next two days.
Mercury dropped to 05 degrees Celsius in Lahore, making Wednesday the coldest day of this winter season. Relative humidity in the morning was recorded at 93 per cent.
Skardu remained the coldest place in the country where the mercury dropped 09 C below freezing.
Biting cold and fog/smog brought life to a standstill by disrupting road, rail and air traffic.
Less visibility forced the closure of portions of Motorways and disrupted traffic on alternative routes including the National Highway from last night to morning.
Fog also disrupted the schedule of international and domestic flights and that of passenger trains.
According to the synoptic situation, continental air prevails over most parts of Pakistan.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has predicted mainly cold and dry weather for most parts of Pakistan including Lahore on Wednesday evening/night and the next two days.
Extremely cold weather is likely in the upper parts during the period.
Fog/smog will continue to prevail in plains of Punjab, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and upper Sindh.
Dense fog/smog is likely in Bahawalpur, Sahiwal, Sargodha, Lahore, Gujranwala, Narowal, Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Khanewal, Multan, Khanpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Jhelum, Bhakkar, Layyah, Dera Ghazi Khan and surroundings during morning and night hours.
In Lahore, minimum temperature will likely remain between 05-07 C on Thursday and Friday.
