LAHORE – The mysterious death of a student has sparked protests against the administration of Avicenna Medical College – a private medical college located in Lahore’s DHA.

Hundreds of students joined protests on college campuses while thousands of tweets were being shared online by medical aspirants, doctors, journalists, and rights activists.

It started with the death of female student Mahnoor Nadeem, who was found dead under mysterious circumstances, and what followed was shocking stories of horror by fellows. As some raised their voices against student abuse students at Avicenna Medical College, others directly pointed out Abdul Waheed Sheikh – chairman trust of the medical college.

Students, who are studying under fear, called for action against Mr Sheikh and his daughters who are on administration positions and were allegedly involved in abusing students.

Avicenna Medical College students lamented the severe exploitation and abuse, they are facing as some mentioned being slapped with heavy fines and no permission granted for leaves, even in emergency cases.

Posts shared online specifically mentioned a student named Mahnoor Nadeem, who died of a heart attack. She was reportedly denied leave while being under the weather. The fellow students revealed that she faced stress, including sitting on the floor and massive fines of around 1lac.

Students shared ordeal in heart-wrenching posts, saying Abdul Waheed Sheikh, was recorded using abusive language towards students, and there are reports of physical abuse, including tearing a student’s shirt.

A professor was also accused of sexual harassment, but he is still teaching at the college. It further mentioned that social media handles of students are being monitored to silence dissenters.

Amid the protests and social media outrage, PMDC or provincial administration has not shared any update on the matter.
