With the most recent fundraising campaign over, the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton is working to build on last year’s campaign success.

“When we raise almost $1.5 million, it is now a year-round activity, and it is no longer just a September to December activity,” said outgoing campaign chairperson Vicky Ducharme.

“As we move on to 2024, I am very pleased to report that the Coffee Lodge will help get the next campaign off to a good start as they did last year by celebrating national latte day,” she said.

All day on Sunday, Feb. 11, the four Sarnia Coffee Lodge locations and one in Petrolia will donate $1 from every latte sold.

“Last year, the community rallied together and bought lattes to support the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton and not only raised money, but also helped raise valuable awareness of the United Way and the 29 local programs and services that United Way funds,” she said.

Ducharme said more events are planned later this spring, to be announced as details are finalized.

Ducharme, a rural resident, has chaired the United Way campaign for five years. While stepping down from as campaign chairperson, she’ll remain on the United Way volunteer board of directors.

Ducharme said United Way will have a positive announcement at the end of March, naming the 2024 campaign chair at its annual general meeting.

As a result of last year’s campaign, the United Way of Sarnia-Lambton has announced funding for 17 local agencies providing 29 programs and services, including poverty-related, youth, mental health and seniors services.

Ducharme said some money already has been raised for the 2024 campaign. Fairwinds Lodge held a fundraising euchre tournament among residents.

“Fairwinds Lodge, the employees, and the residents have a tradition of raising money for the United Way, and we are grateful for their support,” she said.

Some employee groups, including Ineos Styrolution and Lambton College, have begun grab-and-go lunch fundraisers for the United Way. Others are planning events for this winter and spring.

Ducharme reminded the community to think of the United Way as they update their wills.

Several people have left United Way money as part of their estate planning, she said. United Way invests bequests with the Sarnia-Lambton Future Fund Foundation and revenues from the fund are used every year.

“This helps to provide sustainable funding for agencies now, and in the future, while at the same time reducing campaign and administration costs for the United Way, enabling a greater percentage of donations to local agencies,” she said.
