A freshly fallen blanket of snow is no reason to stay inside. With a little help from the Brantford Public Library, you can be active all winter with an amazing selection of free resources!

One of the most amazing items you can borrow this winter is snowshoes and trekking poles. Snowshoes are available in a variety of adult and children’s sizes. In addition, a family pack of four sets of snowshoes and poles is also available. The sets can be borrowed with an adult card for seven days at the main branch. A borrowing agreement must be signed when checking them out for the first time.

When you check out your snowshoes, don’t forget to borrow one of the library’s free day passes for the Grand River Conservation Area and Ontario Parks. Explore all the Grand River Conservation Area has to offer this winter, as well as over 300 provincial parks throughout Ontario. Passes are available at the main and St. Paul branches and can be borrowed with an adult library card for seven days. You can also place a hold on the passes through the library’s online catalogue or by calling and speaking with staff.

Not all birds fly south for the winter. Why not borrow one of the library birdwatching kits and check in on our fine feathered friends? Available through a partnership with Birds Canada, each birdwatching kit comes in a handy backpack that contains a set of Vortex binoculars, a bird guide, a local bird chart, and a birdwatching journal. Kits can be borrowed with an adult library card for 14 days at the main and St. Paul branches. Place a hold in the library’s online catalogue or speak with staff to reserve your kit.

If you need a break between your outdoor adventure, you can check out an amazing selection of books, DVDs, and more featuring winter activities. Check out Essential Guide to Winter Recreation by Andrew Vietze. This comprehensive guide to winter recreation features practical advice that emphasizes preparation, safety, outdoor stewardship, and fun. Ski and snowboarding enthusiasts can stream several of Warren Miller’s adventure-filled documentaries for free from Hoopla Digital.

Young winter lovers will enjoy The Kids’ Winter Fun Book by Claire Gillman. This fun and colourful book includes instructions for games, crafts, recipes, and other activities sure to entertain children and their families throughout the winter.
