“I was not depressed, I WAS ANGRY, and it was not that I was not eating, it was that I was eating too much.” —former President Donald Trump

In a new book, Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney writes that ex-Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy told her he visited Donald Trump three weeks after the events of Jan. 6 because Trump was “depressed” and “not eating.”

This alleged claim is significant because McCarthy’s visit to Mar-a-Lago was interpreted at the time (by both neutral observers and other Republicans) as a politically calculated effort to get back in Trump’s good graces after having denounced him for inciting the mob that attacked the Capitol. The idea that McCarthy was actually there for reasons of personal empathy is a bit far-fetched, and adds to the pile of evidence that the ex-speaker is a full-of-baloney kind of person, but is not otherwise that relevant as a matter of historical record. The important fact is that McCarthy’s visit, whatever motivated it, was a key step in Trump’s being reembraced by Republican leaders.

Or, at least, that’s the important fact to most people. But not Donald Trump, who is peeved about what you might call the “food piece” of Cheney’s account. Wrote the former president in a 12:56 a.m. Monday post on Truth Social:

Crazy Liz Cheney, who suffers from Trump Derangement Syndrome at a level rarely seen before, writes in her boring new book that Keven McCarthy said he came to Mar-a-Lago after the RIGGED election because, “the former president was depressed and not eating.” That statement is not true. I was not depressed, I WAS ANGRY, and it was not that I was not eating, it was that I was eating too much. But that’s not why Keven McCarthy was there. He was at Mar-a-Lago to get my support, and to bring the Republican Party together - Only good intentions.

It appears Trump perceives sadness or depression as emotional conditions that connote weakness; in his effort to make the record show instead that he was doing the opposite of what a beta male would do, he is obligated to say that instead of not eating, he was eating all sorts of things, probably including steaks, big hamburgers, bacon, and parts of a used muffler.

Regrettably, there is some scientific grounding to Trump’s framework for approaching the subject. In a 2016 Cornell University study of food consumption, researchers found that while “women do not appear to be impressed by feats of overeating” and felt “self-conscious” when asked to eat chicken wings in the presence of a crowd, men found the experience “cool” and “exhilarating” and “perceived competitive-eating males to be both stronger and having more offspring.” Men: They’re stupid.

In other news, Trump has also used his platform in recent hours to denounce Robert De Niro and the College Football Playoff committee. There are three hundred and thirty six days remaining until the next presidential election.
