One of the world’s oldest sporting competitions resumes this week when the FA Cup kicks off its third round.

The tournament was first contested during the 1871-72 season, when Wanderers F.C. defeated Royal Engineers A.F.C. in the final of the 15-team tournament at London’s Kennington Oval.

More than 150 years later, 732 teams will take part in this season’s version of English soccer’s top club competition, with the final slated for May 25 at Wembley Stadium.

Here’s what you need to know about the third round of the FA Cup.

Single-elimination format

The 32 matches that make up the third round are all single elimination and not two-legged, home-and-away affairs.

If a team loses, it’s eliminated. But if a game is tied after 90 minutes of regulation time, a replay match will be scheduled at a later date where extra time and penalty kicks (if necessary) will determine the winner.

Premier League clubs set to enter the mix

As is the tradition, the numerous qualifying rounds and the first two proper rounds of the FA Cup exclusively featured teams from across England’s lower tiers.

The third round is when all 20 Premier League clubs and all 24 sides from the Championship (second division) join the fray after receiving byes in the earlier stages.

The 44 teams from the top two divisions join the 20 winners from the second round, which includes the lowest-ranked club left in the competition: Maidstone United F.C., which competes in the sixth division. The third round also features a trio of clubs from the fifth division: Chesterfield F.C., Eastleigh F.C. and Aldershot Town F.C.

Crystal Palace vs. Everton kicks things off
Things officially kick off on Thursday (3 p.m. ET / noon p.m. PT), when Crystal Palace welcomes Everton to Selhurst Park in one of four all-Premier League matchups in the third round.

This contest features two clubs that are fighting to stay alive in England’s top division this season. Everton sits 17th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone, while Crystal Palace is 14th and six points from safety.

Everton already earned a 3-2 Premier League win over Palace at Selhurst Park in November, courtesy of an 86th-minute goal from Idrissa Gueye. But the Toffees are winless in their last 12 FA Cup matches (eight losses) in London. Their last victory in the English capital in the FA Cup came in the 1995 final, when they defeated Manchester United.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool highlights the third round

Sunday’s clash between Arsenal and Liverpool (11:30 a.m. ET / 8:30 a.m. PT) at the Emirates Stadium is the showcase match as it pits two Premier League giants against each other. Liverpool tops the table with 45 points and has just a five-point edge over fourth-place Arsenal.

Between the two clubs, they have won the FA Cup on 22 occasions, with Liverpool last hoisting the Cup in 2022. Although Arsenal closed out 2023 with a three-game losing skid (two losses), Liverpool is unbeaten in 13 league matches since suffering its only loss of the season on Sept. 30 away to Tottenham.

Both teams will be missing key players for Sunday’s clash. Mohamed Salah is the Premier League’s joint top scorer this season with 14 goals, but he’ll be away on international duty with Egypt at the African Cup of Nations. Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny will also be with Egypt, while Ukrainian left fullback Oleksandr Zinchenko is questionable with a calf injury.

Manchester City begins defence of its title

Manchester City begins its quest to repeat as FA Cup champions when it hosts Championship side Huddersfield Town A.F.C. on Sunday (9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT) at the Etihad Stadium.

The Blues cruised through the tournament last season en route to winning it for the seventh time in history. Shutout wins over Chelsea, Arsenal, Bristol City, Burnley and Sheffield United preceded their 2-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester United in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Huddersfield is languishing in 21st place in the championship (out of 24 teams) and has just two wins in its last 13 league outings. On paper, this is a total mismatch as Man City has way more star power and resources than its meagre opponents, so look for manager Pep Guardiola to rest some of his regular starters and save them for the slog of Premier League games coming up.

Wrexham A.F.C. back for more

Can Wrexham A.F.C.’s come up with another “Hollywood story” in the FA Cup this year? That’s one of the biggest questions ahead of the third round, which includes fourth-division club Wrexham AFC, co-owned by Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds, taking on Shrewsbury Town F.C. of the third division on Sunday (9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT).

Reynolds and fellow Hollywood star Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham in 2020 for a modest $2.5 million. The Welsh club turned heads last season when it punched well above its weight to reach the fourth round of the FA Cup, including upsetting Championship team Coventry City in the previous round. From there, Wrexham finished as champions of the National League to win promotion to the fourth division.

Wrexham is tied for second place in the fourth division and could seal another promotion up the English soccer pyramid if it continues its solid run of form. But before that, it faces a somewhat tricky game this weekend away to Shrewsbury Town, which would love nothing more than to knock Reynolds’ club down a peg or two.

Canadians Koné and Millar in action

Two members of the Canadian men’s team should prominently feature for their respective clubs in the third round of the FA Cup.

Midfielder Ismaël Koné and Championship side Watford F.C. host fifth division club Chesterfield F.C. at Vicarage Road on Saturday (10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT), while forward Liam Millar and the Championship’s Preston North End pay a visit to Premier League heavyweight Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday (12:30 p.m. ET / 9:30 a.m. PT).

Koné, 21, has three goals in 24 appearances for Watford this season, including a stunning goal in a 3-3 draw vs. Plymouth Argyle in the Championship on New Year’s Day. Millar, 24, has three goals for Preston North End in 2023-24, and is riding high after his man-of-the-match effort in a 2-1 win over Leeds United on Boxing Day that saw him collect an assist and score the decisive goal in the 89th minute.
