For the third straight month, immigration topped the list of the most important problems for Americans in the Gallup poll.

The poll found that 27 percent of Americans said the most important issue facing the country right now is immigration — marking the longest consecutive period in Gallup polling that immigration has been a top issue in the U.S. Twenty-eight percent of Americans said both in February and in March that immigration was the most important problem in the country.

February marked the first-time immigration was listed as a top concern since 2019, according to the Gallup poll at the time.

The April poll found Republicans were much more likely than Democrats to list immigration as one of the most important issues. Forty eight percent of Republicans mentioned immigration in the latest poll, while just 8 percent of Democrats did the same. A quarter of independents also mentioned immigration, according to Gallup.

The share of Republicans who mentioned immigrations is down from the share in February, when a record-high 57 percent included it.

Other problems listed by respondents included the government and economy, according to the poll. Eighteen percent of respondents listed government as the most important problem, 17 percent listed the economy and 13 percent listed inflation.

The poll was conducted among 1,001 adults between April 1-22 and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

Immigration has been one of the top concerns of voters for months as the U.S. heads toward elections next November. Republicans have been seizing on issues at the border as a rallying cry for their campaigns as they frequently criticized the Biden administration for its handling of immigration.
