When it comes to Jamestown’s rising deer populations, let’s not complicate a relatively simple situation.

There are really only two options – either cull some of the deer or let them be. It really is that simple.

If the decision is to remove a certain number of deer from the city’s deer population, then the matter becomes a little more complex. Note, we said a little. We’re not doing long division here or recreating Einstein’s theory of relativity..

Realistically, if the city decides it’s in the public interest to thin the city’s burgeoning deer herd, we’re talking about reaching out to the DEC and surrounding towns and villages to see if anyone else wants to cooperate if they’re having a similar problem. Once that question is asked and answered, then the city has to find the best places to hunt to thin the herd where people aren’t going to be in the way of hunters.

The real complexity here isn’t in killing deer to thin an expanding herd, but rather the fact that there will never be a broad consensus amongst city residents to take action. There are so many people who love the feel of the country they have when they see three or four deer grazing in their backyard that they will never be in favor of killing the animals no matter how many gardens or bushes they eat or no matter how many accidents or near accidents they cause on city roads.

For every person who wants to see the city act, there is a person who will be upset if the city acts.

What to do about deer in the city isn’t really complex. Dealing with people who are upset with the plan is what’s complex.
