What are Democrats so afraid of?

The way they’re acting, you would think that Joe Biden hadn’t beaten Donald Trump for the presidency in 2020.

Because now the Dems have gone from wanting to defeat Trump in any potential rematch to keeping that rematch from happening at all.

The Colorado Supreme Court has barred Trump from appearing on the GOP primary ballot in that state in 2024. Other states, including California, are looking to do the same. You can bet somebody in New York will launch a similar legal action.

That’s one way to beat the guy: don’t even allow him to run. Talk about rigging an election. Talk about election interference. Talk about disenfranchising voters and depriving them of a choice. I thought there were laws against that.

All this because Trump is said to have caused the “insurrection” at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

In a bid to keep Trump off the ballot entirely, Trump opponents are using a section of the Civil War-era 14th Amendment that bars those who have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding office.

Only it wasn’t an insurrection that we saw on Jan. 6. It was a riot. It wasn’t the firing on Fort Sumter, which kicked off the Civil War. It wasn’t the storming of the Bastille, which sparked the French Revolution. It wasn’t even the Boston Tea Party.

Anti-Trump types don’t care for these distinctions because their aim is to defeat Trump by any means necessary. And they have plenty of judicial firepower on their side. So a state court has decided that Trump was culpable for what happened on Jan. 6 and is unfit to stand for office.

Maybe he is unfit. But it should at least be a fair fight. Barring Trump from the ballot isn’t that. Biden and the Dems should put their ideas up against Trump’s, if Trump is indeed the GOP nominee, and let the American voters decide.

Trump is far from a perfect candidate and was far from a perfect president. Many people who voted for him once didn’t do so again.

And Trump continues to give his opponents fodder, including the recent controversy over his “blood poisoning” comment regarding immigration, which some have said echoes Adolph Hitler’s writings in “Mein Kampf.”

Me? I’m concerned about the rampant antisemitism that we’ve seen on American college campuses and around the world lately. Now that reminds me of Hitler’s Germany.

Even more than that, it’s thanks to Trump’s three Supreme Court appointees that Roe v. Wade, which guaranteed a woman’s right to an abortion, was overturned.

The Dobbs decision has already caused GOP reckonings at the ballot box and will likely reverberate throughout the 2024 presidential and congressional elections.

Dems should be chomping at the bit to go up against Trump, his presidential record, his court cases and his various foibles and issues. After all, they beat him last time.

But they’re not so eager, because their own likely nominee, Biden, looks less fit for the job by the day. He has some of the worst polling numbers since Jimmy Carter thanks to the border mess and other issues.

So Dems will do what they can to keep Trump from even being on the ballot.

That was the goal behind those two impeachments that the Dems laid on Trump during his presidency. Had the Senate voted to convict Trump either time, a second vote could have been held that could have prevented Trump from ever running for office again.

The Democrats failed then and they haven’t stopped trying since. And now it will be up to the Supreme Court to decide whether a political candidate can stand for election in a free and democratic society.

If Trump can get on the ballot, it should be up to the people to decide whether he deserves their vote.

It’s not Trump that the Democrats fear. It’s the American voter.
