Michael Maguire still has several weeks to weigh up his NSW team for the opening State of Origin game, but there’s one name he should be strongly considering: Wayde Egan.

I watched the Warriors dismantle the Rabbitohs last week and their wily dummy-half had me standing up out of my chair and applauding. It’s the best game I’ve seen him play.

I think everyone knew he always showed promise as a young hooker at the Panthers, but he’s well and truly flourished since moving across the Tasman.

He has this art of deception around the ruck that very few players possess. He is constantly testing an opposition defence.

There’s two of his teammates that really benefit: Tohu Harris and Shaun Johnson.

Harris can get over the advantage line so regularly because Egan engages the marker defenders, and Johnson is also afforded space to the outside because the defence is so concerned with the No.9.

There was one set play which showed the Warriors are a seriously smart football team.

Fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad swept around the back of the ruck and Egan found him with a pass in which he never locked eyes on his intended target, making out he was going to throw the ball to Harris a little wider. It was sensational to watch.
