But then came the puppies!

Golden retriever puppies frolicking in snow. Wolf pups gambolling on a gravel road. An urbane pair of pooches trotting along a neon-streaked city street.

These are some of the delights unveiled by Sora, a new service from OpenAI that can generate video clips from text prompts.

The capability of AI to generate images emerged in 2014, Professor Simon Lucey, director of the Australian Institute for Machine Learning, explained at a recent expert briefing on deepfakes.

Then ChatGPT emerged and turbocharged the entire enterprise.

“What we’re really seeing at the moment is the intersection of these two technologies coming together,” Lucey said. When Sora’s sample videos dropped, “A lot of tech pundits like myself were sitting back in awe”.
