Is the key to killing kilos sitting within a rusty can in your pantry or fermenting at the back of the fridge?

A trio of recent studies have linked common kitchen staples to significant weight loss.

One study found daily shots of zesty apple cider vinegar triggered a whopping average loss of five to seven kilos over 12 weeks. Another linked a few servings of crunchy, funky kimchi to lower obesity.

And a recent Chinese study discovered that feeding people 40 grams of resistant starch – of the kind found in chickpeas, lentils and legumes – led to participants shedding three kilos in eight weeks. Who needs Ozempic when a bowl of dahl will suffice?

Despite headline-grabbing claims, each of these studies has drawbacks.

They also made me wonder why we continue to get hung up on weight loss “silver bullets” which, although they’re the focus of scientific inquiry – are often as mythical as werewolves.

In January, Korean researchers reported in the BMJ that men who ate one to three servings of cabbage kimchi per day had an 11 per cent lower likelihood of obesity compared to those who ate none. The study also found that the prevalence of obesity among women who ate a different kind of kimchi – radish kimchi or kkakdugi – was 8 per cent lower.
