Jason Demetriou has the next three games at home – against Canterbury, the New Zealand Warriors and Cronulla – to spark some improvement in his battling South Sydney side, or risk being sacked.

That is the simple scenario for the Rabbitohs coach, whose side is bottom of the ladder after three rounds following Friday’s 48-6 hammering by bitter rivals the Sydney Roosters.

Demetriou admitted after the defeat “it’s probably the lowest point of my career right now”, but was adamant he is still the best man for the job.

Souths officials are privately backing Demetriou, and have given him everything he needs to achieve success.

The club, however, demands a top-four finish every year, which won’t happen this season unless the coach turns things around very quickly. If you factor in the second half of last year, Souths have won just four of their past 16 NRL matches.

Only Wests Tigers – who have collected the past two wooden spoons – have won fewer games in that time.

Should they lose on Good Friday to the Bulldogs, it will be Souths’ worst start to a season since 2008, the year they dropped their opening seven matches and finished 14th in a 16-team competition.

It doesn’t get any easier for the Rabbitohs after that. They have the bye in round seven then face the Storm in Melbourne before hosting three-time defending premiers Penrith.
