When the AFL fixtured Collingwood and Hawthorn in the final game of Gather Round, the pre-game subplot and promotional storyline didn’t require marketing expertise.

Jack Ginnivan had said plenty about his old team. Further fuel was provided on Easter Monday when Ginnivan was treated harshly by the umpires on the adjudication of high contact. The AFL acknowledged that the gadfly small forward had been dudded.

“Water off a duck’s [back] a little bit. I’m very good at coping with things that come my way,” said Ginnivan of the pre-game discussion of him. “I’ve got an amazing support group around me. ”

And so, as destiny and the audience demanded, Ginnivan booted Hawthorn’s first goal from a free for high contact, continuing his role as the competition’s most visible and discussed non-star footballer.

Touched rather than tackled too high by both Patrick Lipinski and Tom Mitchell, the free was precisely the kind that he had been unable to win since 2022 at Collingwood and in his first four games with the Hawks.

“This week, I just tried to drive my legs, go through the tackle – which I did, didn’t drop my knees or roll my arm, which is why I got the free kick,” explained Ginnivan, who had taken heed of Geelong great Joel Selwood’s expert commentary on high contact.

“I’m going to continue to try to do that and be a better player in that regard.

“I heard Joel Selwood’s comments during the week and he’s a professional at it. If I can take a few words from him, it’s a very smart idea for myself.”

Ginnivan provided the initial interest in a game that Collingwood simply had to win if the Magpies were to make any meaningful charge in 2024.
