Last year my eldest and youngest took me to the Forum for Jet’s Get Born 20th anniversary show. Back in the day the CD was on high rotation in the people mover and has become a nostalgic touchpoint of family togetherness as much as a Lord of the Rings marathon or our love for Bombers legend Dustin Fletcher.

That night we yelled songs at each other – gotta leave town, got another appointment – and revelled in memories. The only thing missing was middle kid Felix. Out on Flinders Street after the show, my son Jack rang him. Mate, come and meet us in the city.

Felix was a step ahead: I’m already at yours. Get an Uber, bring the old stager over. Friday kick-ons.

The show was ace, but the best thing about the night was it reinforced how close our children still are. The legacy of years of sharing bedrooms, secrets, whinges, Mario Kart controllers is that as adults they go to the footy, to festivals, to each other’s places.

Last month one of their mates said they know if they walk into a party and see any of my kids, another one is surely stashing beers and the third is about to arrive and commandeer the DJ decks. They’re a package deal.

Along with being able to put up tents, budget with reasonable proficiency and never getting sepsis from any of their tattoos, their closeness is up there with my greatest mother achievements. Maybe it shouldn’t be – is raising siblings who love and protect each other really that hard? – but many of us know the biting hurt of falling out of synch with family and being too stubborn or scared to mend fences.

Which brings us to the world’s most famous feuding bros: Princes William and Harry. Hey fellas, this is time-critical, so I’m abandoning the standard sycophancy and deference to tell it straight.

It’s time to cut the shit, grow up and be brothers again.
