The Dockers did so much right on Saturday.

But a perfect start to the season came to a shattering end, with the AFL’s admission they made a mistake adjudicating Matt Cottrell’s mark providing cold comfort for the club and supporters.

Making matters worse, umpire dissent from Docker Jordan Clark gifted the Blues the four points, leaving players and fans fuming.

Fremantle dominated the midfield battle and showed why they entered the match with the competition’s best defence, keeping Carlton to only seven goals, before the Blues added three at the death to steal victory.

Aside from the obvious drama surrounding Cottrell’s no mark and Clark’s umpire incident, several crucial moments where things went wrong stood out in the final minutes, which will form a key part of the Dockers’ review.

Nine points up with minutes remaining, they were in the box seat.

Josh Treacy drifted into defence to be the spare man.

It was undoubtedly the right decision, but when his time came, execution evaded him.

With two minutes on the clock, Treacy was primed to intercept mark Adam Cerra’s kick inside 50.
