They say it’s always clearer in hindsight but sometimes things are just as easily observed at the time.
We had been told the wife and mother of the future king would take three months to recover from planned surgery – and perhaps that should have been enough.
It’s hard to pinpoint the moment when we all came to expect the private health concern of a public figure was fair game for clicks or laughs, but perhaps we can now understand the hesitance of those around her, including William, to play the media’s game.
PR gurus both professional and amateur were willing to point out some bad missteps. But perhaps, having suffered the loss of a parent in the most public of ways, the heir to the British throne put his family above the institution.
He is now forced to confront the mortality of not only his father, the King, but his wife. No doubt the fears of his small children will also be uppermost in his mind.
The 42-year-old Princess of Wales is having a course of preventative chemotherapy, which is when drugs are given to destroy any cancer cells lurking in the body and to stop them from spreading or returning. It is usually given after patients have had surgery to remove tumours, and typically involves several doses of chemotherapy drugs over at least three months.
