Listening to a recent Windsor radio show, an Amherstburg town councillor stated that any resident in Amherstburg can request in advance to have their issue/concern on the agenda and attend an evening council meeting to present their concerns.

It’s council’s responsibility, he said, to listen and address all residents’ concerns.

I was shocked to hear this caring and open approach as it differed vastly from my experience with Windsor’s oppressive approach in which you are at the mercy of your ward councillor to decide if he/she feels there is merit to your concern and whether it warrants being on the city council agenda. The change in council meeting start times to 10 a.m. also restricts most residents from attending as a delegate.

In my experience with city hall (over the past 17 months and counting) over the issue of train whistle noise within the city, even if your issue/concern is felt to be important enough to be on the agenda, be prepared for the mayor, councillors and administration to ignore and dismiss your concerns out of hand and make excuses that their hands are tied.

Time for a drastic change in how Windsor city council treats residents. After all, who is advocating for the residents and willing to take a stand and go above and beyond making excuses?

No one, I’m afraid.
