It’s time to review the Governor General’s Act and revise the salary and benefits of the incumbent and past governors general.

It is ludicrous that Canadian taxpayer’s fund their wardrobe, when the salary is already $342,000 (increasing to $362,800 for 2024). There doesn’t seem to be any regard for taxpayer dollars, when spending on international trips, some of it seemingly trivial.

While Canadians have to tighten their belts, in 2023, the National Capital Commission wastefully spent $8 million in taxpayer funds on a garage at the Governor General’s Rideau Hall home in Ottawa.

The Liberal-NDP coalition government has been spending recklessly, growing the national debt to more than $2.1 trillion. It would be prudent for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to freeze the salaries for himself, fellow members of Parliament and the Governor General before they’re set to rise on April 1.

In 2010, then-prime minister Stephen Harper froze his own and MPs’ salaries for two years. This extravagant spending by our current government is not sustainable.

Adding insult to injury, Canadians will be burdened with another carbon tax increase the same day as Trudeau gets a pay increase.

This Liberal-NDP government is beyond its expiry date.
