Re: Protestors rally amid battle to reopen Windsor’s SafePoint drug consumption site (March 29)

Windsor’s SafePoint, a safe consumption site, must be reopened immediately to save lives and address the ongoing drug toxicity crisis.

People must be allowed to consume drugs in a safe environment. This site — and another in Sudbury — have closed their doors due to the province’s unacceptable pause on reviewing applications.

Windsor has waited more than 18 months for provincial approval and Sudbury almost double that — 2.5 years. Without approval, these sites do not have access to government funding and the health care professionals who are ready to provide care.

More than seven people, on average, die from the toxic drug supply every day in Ontario. This preventable tragedy is unacceptable. In many communities, there is nowhere else to get this support.

The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario reiterates that substance use is a health condition and should be treated as such. We are part of 50-plus organizations convened by the Canadian Drug Policy Coalition calling to renew the funding immediately.

Ontario must implement a provincial harm reduction strategy, which includes safe consumption, drug-checking, safer supply and the decriminalization of personal possession.

Lives are at stake. The premier must act now.
