The wizard stepped out from behind the curtain late Saturday as Iran launched a direct attack against Israel. More than 100 drones, plus an unspecified number of ballistic missiles, were fired from Iran late Saturday, striking across Israel in the early hours of Sunday.

Israeli medics with the Magen David Adom ambulance service reported that the first casualty was a 10-year-old Bedouin boy injured near Arad in Southern Israel.

American, British and Jordanian air force pilots were assisting Israel in shooting down the drones and missiles even before they arrived in Israeli airspace. It is the kind of help that Israel needed. While the Iron Dome is effective against missiles, it is less effective against drones and can be overwhelmed with a mass attack.

The show of support from allies was a message to Iran: Israel is not alone in the face of aggression from Tehran.

For years, but especially the past several months, the Islamic Republic of Iran has been acting like The Wizard of Oz, hiding behind a curtain while directing death, destruction and chaos throughout the region.

The regime in Tehran helped Hamas plan, train for and carry out the attacks of Oct. 7 against Israel. They continue to fund Hezbollah which launches periodic attacks against Israel from the north while threatening an all-out war.

And of course, recently, Iran has used their Houthi proxies in Yemen to attack shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

The strike on Israel came hours after Iranian troops descended from a helicopter to directly seize a ship with Israeli ties. The MSC Aries, owned by Monaco-based Israeli citizen Eyal Ofer, was seized about 80 kilometres off the coast of the United Arab Emirates where it had just left the port of Khalifa bound for India.

The seizure of the ship was a sign that things were escalating. The direct attack on Israeli soil launched from Iran instead of one their proxies is a development the world had been hoping to avoid.

“Whoever harms us, we will harm them,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

American President Joe Biden, who has been pressuring Israel to restrain their response to Hamas in Gaza and had threatened to withdraw some support, came out strong for Israel. Biden cut short a visit to his home state of Delaware, returning to the White House to oversee a coordinated response.

“I just met with my national security team for an update on Iran’s attacks against Israel. Our commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad,” Biden said.

In Britain, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said that he will work with allies to stabilize the situation and prevent further escalation.

“The U.K. will continue to stand up for Israel’s security and that of all our regional partners, including Jordan and Iraq,” Sunak said.

Preventing a retaliation by Israel will be difficult.

Iran is claiming that their strike is retaliation for Israel’s drone strike attack which took out Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a key figure in Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps who oversaw relations with Hezbollah. Israel will not accept a response from Iran that threatened civilian populations across the country without their own retaliation.

The Iranian regime is a poisonous cancer spreading destabilization across the region. The Mullahs in Tehran have visions of being the regional power and exporting their theocratic autocracy around the world.

Israel and its allies need to deal with Iran if they want to stop the war and bloodshed that will come otherwise.

The time to deal with the regime in Iran is now.
