Visits to Winnipeg this week by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, as well as a recent Axe the Carbon Tax rally at the RBC Convention Centre featuring Conservative boss Pierre Poilievre, are all an indication of how important voters here might be when the next federal election is held. Polling still has the Tories in front of the Liberals by double digits and a number of local ridings could flip parties. If the vote were held today, it would mostly be about the tax on pollution. But in politics, things can change quickly so it’s hard to say what might be motivating voters as late as October of 2025. However, I do think affordability will be front and centre. Like him or not, that’s why Poilievre is ahead in the polls. His message has been simple and effective on that issue and others. Will Poilievre hang on to the lead? Can Trudeau turn things around? Will Singh’s alliance with the PM cost him votes? Only time will tell…

Congrats to the Winnipeg Jets on clinching a playoff spot! Thursday night’s 5-2 victory over Calgary makes it two wins in a row after that six game losing skid. Let’s hope the boys can keep the winning ways going Saturday afternoon in Minnesota. Then it’s Nashville, Dallas and Colorado next week before returning home for games against Seattle and Vancouver to wrap things up. Bring on the Whiteouts!

A very funny Winnipegger has released his first comedy album. Jared Story’s “Good Ideas,” recorded at Park Theatre, is now available for pre-order at JaredStory.Bandcamp.com. You can even listen to one of the tracks for free at the website. I hope you’ll support Jared on this project, as he’s really done a lot for the city’s comedy scene over the years. He’s been the organizer and emcee of his Winnipeg Comedy Showcase for over a decade now. By the way, the next one is coming up on May 19th, also at the Park.

This summer’s hottest fashion trend will apparently be the cowboy hat. And you can thank (or blame) Beyonce. Those who know say her new country album has added momentum to the trend which was already in progress after the western-inspired designs in last summer’s Barbie movie. When Queen Bey announced Cowboy Carter during the Super Bowl, Google searches for cowboy hat surged more than 200%.

KISS has sold its logo, brand and music for over $300 million. According to lead singer Gene Simmons, the rights to all of it now belong to Pophouse Entertainment Group, the company behind ABBA’s popular live avatar show. Pophouse plans to do the same and more with KISS. Simmons says it’ll be “unlike anything anyone has ever seen.”

It was big during the COVID-19 pandemic and now dating online is back. Why? Well, because going out has become so expensive. The Wingman dating app says especially young people are embracing the virtual first date. But as my therapist friend Carolyn Klassen told me on my radio show the other day, dating doesn’t have to be costly…go for a walk.
