I was disappointed that the Winnipeg Sun published a letter to the editor attempting to change history. The letter read; “So I clearly can see that the Sun is in full support of the Israel Mossad and thinks it’s OK to slaughter thousands and thousands of innocent Palestinians because a small terrorist group reportedly killed just over a thousand.”

First, Hamas is the governing body that ordered the attack and killings of over a thousand innocent people in Israel on Oct. 7. That is a fact, and it’s irrefutable. The letter also went on to say, “We’re supposed to believe that a small handful of Hamas somehow circumvented all those safeguards and caused mayhem?”

Yes. All news agencies around the globe reported the facts of the horrific attack on Israel on Oct. 7. Many compared the attack to the 9/11 terrorist attacks that happened on U.S. soil. No one disputes that Hamas terrorists initiated this horrific attack that led to this war. To make such ludicrous claims, as this author did, is just more anti-Semitic hate speech. We continue to hear story after story of people who are now denying and questioning the Holocaust — pure ignorance.

Our forefathers died on the field of battle in the Second World War to stop the Holocaust. Uninformed comments such as those made in the letter to the editor not only disrespect the memory of fallen soldiers it also creates more hate and more division.

At a time when facts seem negotiable and the truth is subject to personal interpretation, this type of nonsense threatens to undermine our collective understanding of history. The danger lies in the misguided belief that individual perspectives can reshape immutable events. History, however, is not malleable; it is a tapestry woven from verified accounts and empirical evidence.

Attempts to rewrite history not only distort reality but also disrespect the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us. By cherry-picking “facts” to fit personal narratives, we risk erasing vital lessons and perpetuating ignorance.

It is imperative to uphold the integrity of historical accuracy and resist the temptation to rewrite the past for personal gain or ideological agendas. Embracing diverse perspectives is crucial, but it should never come at the expense of distorting established truths.

We must confront uncomfortable realities and acknowledge the complexities of history, rather than succumbing to the allure of convenient narratives. The writer ends his letter with this astonishing last sentence, “It’s not about getting rid of Hamas, it’s about Israel gaining the entire peninsula all to themselves.” Hamas, the governing body, is a terrorist group that has committed to eliminating Israel.

In an article by the Wilson Centre, they reminded readers that in December 2012, Khaled Mashaal, a leader in exile, reflected the traditional Hamas hardline, “The state will come from resistance, not negotiation. Liberation first, then statehood. Palestine is ours from the river to the sea and from the south to the north,” he said in a speech. “There will be no concession on any inch of the land. We will never recognize the legitimacy of the Israeli occupation, and therefore there is no legitimacy for Israel… We will free Jerusalem inch by inch, stone by stone. Israel has no right to be in Jerusalem.”

The terrorist group Hamas has not hidden from their true intention of eliminating Israel.

I am against war, any war, and we have many currently being fought in the world today. Nobody wants to see loss of life. But, there is no place for terrorism and hate based on religion in our world. The Terrorist leaders of Hamas must release the hostages immediately, and stop their rhetoric of eliminating Israel. It is only then that we will find peace.
