For as long as I’ve known him, Dave McLaughlin has lived by the lessons he was taught growing up at his parish church in Montego Bay.

Most of all, “blessed are those who consider the poor.”

McLaughlin, who immigrated to Canada in 1991 and became a Canadian citizen, turned his love for playing the saxophone as a teenager into a successful career both domestically and internationally.

But he never forgot what he was taught at church when he was young.

That’s why he regularly takes time out from earning a living to do charitable works, one of which is organizing gospel concerts to raise money for academic scholarships for deserving young people.

“One of the best ways I know to fight gun violence is with a scholarship,” McLaughlin said, “to hand young people a scholarship, when others would hand them a gun. We need to show them that we support them and encourage them to make the right choices in life.”

His latest fundraising concert – he’s been doing them for more than a decade during Black History Month – “Celebrating the Legacy of Nelson Mandela & Lincoln Alexander,” will be held at the Scarborough Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 4350 Lawrence Ave. E., at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Tickets are available at the door for $25 or by phoning 647-655-7811, or at Al’s West Indian Food Mart, Beryl’s Pepper Pot, Charley’s West Indian Food, Dam Foods Ajax, Caribbean Spice Variety, Royal Travel and Danforth Food Market.

Donations can also be made to the Educational Foundation For Children’s Care Canada, a registered charity that McLaughlin supports.

I’ll be the master of ceremonies, based on my longtime friendship with McLaughlin, who walks the walk – as opposed to just talking the talk – when it comes to helping and mentoring the young.
