Just the other day, Hank and I were driving down Avenue D again. I was at the wheel and he was singing that old cowboy song, “Cool Water.”

“Are those dunes out there influencing him?” I thought.

License plates were flying all around us. And there was just something about the way he sang that one.

“Is he singing with a different cool drink on his mind?” I thought.

Metal letters and numbers were flashing all kinds of phrases. And by the time he finished the song, I finally had to ask:

“Hank… I mean… when the hell was the last time you had a plain glass of water?”

Well, by the time the stop sign rose out of the mirage tall enough and close enough for me and the car in front to stop, we did. But when their license plate spelled “W-A-T-3-R,” I knew I wasn’t going to get an answer from Hank.
