I sat through eight years of piano lessons from age 6 to 14, learning note by note, frame by frame, never really feeling a passion to get better or practice outside my lessons. Everything changed once I discovered YouTube videos with scrolling notes.

The old ways of painstakingly testing every note and hand position, learning how to hold a beat and squinting at notes hidden in a web of lines were over. I could now watch a screen that showed notes in a much more intuitive way, at least for the piano, kept a steady pace for me, and allowed me to play any popular song in its entirety after just a few tries.

The jury’s still out whether this is the best way for beginners to become experts, but it’s clear that learning to become moderately skilled (or show off to your friends without putting in the practice time) in any instrument is easier today than ever before.
